Homie don’t play that

Where does the phrase “homey don’t play that game” come from?

It seems to be a phrase mostly used by middle-aged people as if they were emulating the younger generation, but I’ve never heard the phrase used. Was it popular a few decades ago?

It comes from a TV show called “In living Color” it was kind of like a SNL type show and there was this clown named “Homey” on it. The skit would usually proceed with him and a bunch of kids around, they would ask him to do something stupid and he would respond with “Homey don’t play that” and then he would hit the kid over the head with a sock that had a tennis ball in it. It was usually pretty funny when seen in context. The show was set in the late 80’s and through the 90’s if I remember correctly. At least that’s where I learned it from.
