Zr2+ electron configuration

What is the ground state electron configuration for Zr2+?

What is the ground state electron configuration for Zr2+?

Is it:

[Kr]5s^2 or [Kr]4d^2
I chose [Kr]5s^2 on a quiz but it was wrong. Can someone explain why? Doesn’t the 5s come before the 4d?

Yes the S block does come before the D block but if you look at the periodic table, it shows that Zr is the 4th from the left and not the 5th. With a +2 ionic charge it would set it back 2. Any how, I have always been told that when you are trying to go down to the simplest form, remember that the D block and the P block always want to be full, so if there are only a couple S’s and the element is in the D block, you label it as a D. Sorry, I hope that helps.
